Novak Djokovic deported, could miss French Open – the sports ministry in France said on Monday 17th January, that elite sportspeople would need to be vaccinated to play in France.
The ministry added that a new vaccine pass – approved by the French parliament on last Sunday – will apply to everyone, to volunteers and to elite sportspeople, including those coming from abroad, until further notice.
Major events like the French Open, had previously permitted unvaccinated athletes to compete under a health bubble around the tournament in 2021.
The measure would crush the 34-year-old World Number 1’s hopes of defending his French Open title, and potentially winning an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam singles crown, If no exemption is possible.
Global attention had focused on Novak Djokovic, possibly the greatest tennis player of all time, who was seeking to win his tenth Australian Open, and the Australian government’s ultimately successful attempt to deport him.
I welcome today’s unanimous decision by the Full Federal Court of Australia, upholding my decision to exercise my power under the Migration Act to cancel Mr Novak Djokovic’s visa in the public interest.
I can confirm that Mr Djokovic has now departed Australia. pic.twitter.com/8CapwFeDCS
