6.7 magnitude Earthquake hits East Taiwan – about 63 km South to Hualien City on 23rd March 1:41am local time. A few aftershocks measuring 4.5 to 6 on the Richter scale followed in the hours after.
The deepest earthquake had a depth of 30.6 km or 19 miles, & the other one was 19.3 km or 12 miles deep.
Both quakes were felt across Taiwan, with the epicenters in Hualien county. With one just offshore – and close to the city of Taitung, said the Taiwanese weather bureau.
Taiwan lies near the junction of 2tectonic plates, and is therefore prone to earthquakes.
In 2016, over 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan, while a catastrophic 7.3 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people back in 1999.
