Mona Lisa smacked by Cake – The Mona Lisa painting was unharmed after a visitor to the Louvre in Paris tried to smash the glass protecting the world’s most famous painting. When he couldn’t, a cake was smeared across the painting’s surface in an apparent environment-related publicity stunt.

“There are people who are destroying the Earth, All artists, think about the Earth. That’s why I did this. Think of the planet.” the vandal said in French.

There have been attempts periodically to vandalize the Leonardo painting, sometimes in protest of various issues.

Back in 1974, when the painting traveled temporarily to the National Art Museum in Tokyo, a woman spray-painted the Mona Lisa in an attempt to highlight the institution’s policies for disabled visitors.

And in 2009, a Russian woman threw a teacup at the painting. The Mona Lisa was not damaged on either occasion.
