Brexit – UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigns – Britain’s Prime Minister tenure came to a turbulent end on Thursday 7th July after a historic party revolt over a series of ethics scandals forced him to step down.
Nearly 60 members of his government resigned, forcing Johnson to finally abandon his attempts to cling onto his position as Prime Minister. Even so, he insisted that he would continue as caretaker leader while the Conservative Party launches the process of choosing a successor.
When asked by journalists on Thursday if any extra bottles of champagne were ordered in response to #Bojo ‘s resignation, an EU spokesman responded: “We have a very limited consumption of alcoholic beverages in the (European) Commission,” – a presumably dig at Johnson’s recent admission that there was “a problem with alcohol” in UK political circles.
Boris was also accused of attending boozy gatherings at Downing Street during the strict Covid-19 lockdown.
Here are some of those who could compete to become the next British prime minister to come:
- Rishi Sunak – chancellor of the Exchequer — Britain’s second most senior political office, overseeing the treasury
- Sajid Javid – A former treasury chief and, until recently, the country’s health secretary.
- Ben Wallace – Secretary of State for Defense Ben Wallace
- Suella Braverman – the current attorney general, Braverman has previously worked as a courtroom attorney and barrister.
- Jeremy Hunt – The runner-up to Johnson in the 2019 leadership contest, Jeremy has a powerful presence outside the administration by chairing Parliament’s health committee throughout the pandemic, often respected scrutiny to the policies of Johnson’s government.
