International Women’s Day 8th March 2022 – how did the day get started? International Women’s Day (IWD) began with a Russian-born Jewish woman Theresa Serber Malkiel when she was in New York City, before traveling to the then Soviet Union and back again.
Malkiel was a proponent of women’s equality and the right to vote, and she remained wary of the upper-class, nonimmigrant women who tended to lead women’s suffrage groups. She argued for true equality — for women, immigrants, African Americans, child laborers – would come through socialism, and proposed the first National Woman’s Day in 1909.
According to the UN, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow. It attempts to recognize the contribution of women and girls around the world, leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.
