Japan re-opens to small test groups of tourists – Japan announced on 17th May, that it would start conducting “test tourism” in the form of limited package tours this summer in May, as a way of gathering information prior to a full re-opening of the country to tourism.
These tourists will be the first to visit the country since it slammed its borders shut at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Itineraries will be cautiously managed, and travellers will be accompanied by tour conductors at all times.
Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito said the tours will be allowed from Australia, Singapore, Thailand and the United States as an experiment.
Travellers on the test will have to be triple-vaccinated and undergo fixed itineraries, the Japan Tourism Agency said. Each tour can have a maximum of 4 people, and a total of 50 participants are expected in the experiment, the government agency said.
