Malaysia Elections – hung parliament, Muhyiddin Yassin led PN wins 73 seats in a stunning triumph for the startup coalition (Perikatan Nasional) formed merely 2 years ago.
Entering GE15 as a dark horse expected to split the votes of the majority Malay-Muslim community that would have usually backed either the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance or the opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH).
However, it convincingly won northern states of Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu, and unexpectedly won heavyweight candidates like two-time prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and opposition icon Nurul Izzah Anwar.
The PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin says he will show statutory declarations of support signed by MPs as proof that his coalition has enough parliamentary support to form a government, and appeared to hint that he was able to draw on support from Barisan Nasional MPs, asserting that it was the constitutional right of any MP to back any person, even from a rival coalition, as prime minister.
Longtime opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, whose PH coalition won the most number of seats in Saturday’s election with 82, is also racing to win support from other groups.
The inconclusive election saw incumbent Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Barisan Nasional alliance suffer its worst electoral defeat ever, winning just 30 of 178 seats it ran for.
