Netflix Chilled, tumbles 25% as subscribers dropped in over 10 years – the company reported in Q1 2022 a loss of 200,000 subscribers, versus the expectation to add 2,500,000 new ones.
The number includes the loss of 700,000 subscribers in Russia where the company has suspended service, without which, Netflix would have added 500,000 net new subscribers in the quarter (versus the 2.5 million expected).
Some key metrics from the Company’s quarterly report versus consensus estimates by Bloomberg
- Revenue: $7.87 billion vs. $7.95 billion expected, $7.16 billion YoY
- Earnings per share: $3.53 vs. $2.91 expected, $3.75 YoY
- Net subscribers: -200,000 vs. +2.51 million expected, +3.98 million million YoY
Co-Chief Executive Reed Hastings said that the company could offer a lower-priced subscription ad-supported tier, a move he has resisted for years.
“It’s pretty clear that it’s working for Hulu, Disney’s doing it, HBO did it. I don’t think we have a lot of doubt that it works. All those companies have figured it out. I’m sure we’ll just get in and figure it out as opposed to test it and maybe do it or not do it. I think we’ll really get in,” Co-CEO Hastings said.
