Novak Djokovic survives 4 set Wimbledon opener – Djokovic becomes first player in history to win 80 matches in all four Grand Slams when he defeated Kwon Soon-woo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court on Monday for his 80th win in Wimbledon

The win extends Djokovic’s unbeaten run at Wimbledon to 22 matches. The Serbian is hunting his fourth consecutive crown at the third major of the year in London, and his second tour-level title of 2022 after he triumphed at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in May.
“I was very pleasantly surprised, I mean, in a positive way,” Djokovic said. “I felt support. Of course, the crowd was engaged in the match. They supported both players. I thought they were very fair to me. I enjoyed my time very much on the court.”
Djokovic has won the last three Wimbledon titles and is going for his seventh overall. That would put him in a tie for the second most with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw. Only Roger Federer, with eight, has more.
The 35-year-old Serb expects to miss the U.S. Open later this summer because he’s unvaccinated against Covid-19 and thus cannot travel to the U.S. as a foreigner, and he faces a three-year ban from the Australian Open after having been deported ahead of the tournament in January, although that ban could end early.
With the victory, he also made a small piece of tennis history as the first player to win at least 80 matches at each of the four grand slams.
