President of China Xi Jinping visits Hong Kong – Chinese leader Xi 习近平 is visiting Hong Kong as part of his first trip to the city since the anti-government protests that began in 2019 and his first appearance outside the mainland in over two years and almost 900 days, for the 25th anniversary of the handover.
Accompanied by China’s first lady Peng Liyuan, Xi travelled by train from Shenzhen on Thursday afternoon and was greeted by school children, lion dancers and Hong Kong’s police band.
Outgoing city leader Carrie Lam 林鄭月 and her husband were among those who welcomed the Chinese President at the station, as people in masks waved flags and bouquets of flowers and simultaneously chanting “Warm welcome” in Mandarin.
“After the storm, Hong Kong has been reborn from the ashes, showing vigor and vitality,” my “heart is always with Hong Kong, one country, two systems” formula would ensure its prosperity and stability. Chinese leader said in a speech at West Kowloon railway station.
His comments were an apparent reference to the sweeping security law Beijing imposed in 2020 that crushed dissent after mass anti-government unrest.
