Travellers Hiking in California – Castaic large wildfire quickly exploded in size to 5,100 acres prompting mandatory evacuations and temporarily closing all lanes of the 5 Freeway as Southern California sweltered under triple-digit temperatures.

Thomas Ewald, deputy fire chief for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said that seven firefighters suffered heat-related injuries Wednesday and were taken to a hospital but later discharged.
The blaze, dubbed the Route Fire, began on Wednesday as much of southern California is being baked in a 100 degrees temperature heatwave. Evacuation order was for an area running from Lake Castaic to the western side of the Interstate 5 highway and included over a 100 homes.
The flames have snarled traffic, destroyed homes, injured firefighters and tanked the air quality around SoCal as smoke pollutes the air.
“Caltrans is assessing the structural integrity of one portion on the northbound side, and officials would determine if they can open an additional lane once the area was evaluated by an engineer” California Highway Patrol Capt. Ed Krusey said during a Thursday morning news conference.
