Visiting Oslo for Northern lights and Famous Walrus? She’s euthanized – Freya the Walrus had to be put to sleep as authorities ruled the 600 kilogram female a threat and made the decision to kill #FreyatheWalrus
Jonas Gahr Støre, Norway’s Prime Minister, said he supports the decision to kill Freya, which captivated crowds in Oslo and found fame online. Understandbly, Sunday’s killing generated a strong backlash online, with conservationists speaking out against the move.
Named after the Norse goddess of beauty and love, the walrus Freya had become a huge attraction since she arrived on 17th July in the waters off the Norwegian capital, where crowds approached to watch as she basked in the sun or dozed on boats, rather than just travelling to see the Northern lights around in Oslo.

Norway’s fisheries directorate director Frank Bakke-Jensen, said other solutions, including moving Freya elsewhere, could not guarantee her safety, after reports showed people swimming with the walrus, throwing things at her, and surrounding her in large numbers.
On one occasion, police had to intervene to evacuate and seal off a bathing area after Freya chased a woman into the sea.
Ultimately, the death of Freya is a sad metaphor for our times. That this creature was forced to leave her home because of humans, was then deemed a danger because of her proximity to humans, and then had her cruelly life taken away by humans, is a devastating indictment of our damaging relationship to this planet and the wildlife that inhabits it.
