24 million locked down in China in zero-Covid approach – as China battles its worst Covid outbreak in two years, Shares of vaccine makers Moderna, BioNTech, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson rose on Monday. A government notice on Sunday said all residential communities in Shenzhen, a city of 17.5 million people, was put under lockdown measures.
People living in the province have been banned from moving around, and anyone leaving the province must apply for a permit from the police, as authorities reported 1437 new cases across the country, including 895 in Jilin.
Virus cases doubled nationwide to nearly 3400, and anxiety mounted over the zero-Covid approach in the face of the worst outbreak in two years.
Shenzhen residents have been anxious over a renewed outbreak and angst at the swift, draconian measures to squash clusters.
“The closures are too sudden. My friend woke up in the morning to find her building was sealed overnight without warning. Her boss had to mail her laptop to her.” Shenzhen resident Zhang told the AFP
