Brazil elects Lula da Silva President in comeback win over Jair Bolsonaro – Far-right incumbent President Bolsonaro was very close in Brazil’s runoff presidential election with leftist Worker’s Party Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after more than 97 percent of the votes tallied.

The election pits an incumbent vowing to safeguard conservative Christian values against a leftist former president promising to return the country to a more prosperous past. With 98.8% of the votes tallied in the runoff vote, da Silva had 50.8% and Bolsonaro 49.2%, and the election authority said da Silva’s victory was a mathematical certainty.
The extremely tight race showed how politically polarized Brazil has become in recent years. Although the balloting was largely peaceful, there were several violent incidents during the campaign with authorities reporting the killings of at least four da Silva supporters at the hands of pro-Bolsonaro fanatics.
“They tried to bury me alive and I’m here. Starting on January 1, 2023, I will govern for the 215 million Brazilians, not just the ones who voted for me. There are not two Brazils. We are one country, one people, one great nation,” said incoming President Lula da Silva.
