Omicron XE variant in UK, detected in Thailand – The Covid-19 Omicron XE sub-variant is currently spreading in the United Kingdom (UK) with 637 reported cases, and was detected in Thailand recently.
“The MoH is continuously monitoring the situation, and so far our neighbouring countries have yet to report any detection of the new sub-variant,” said the minister, reminding the public, especially those overseas, to ensure they have been fully vaccinated with a booster. We know that the pandemic abroad is still on-going, and if it persists, this variant is indeed expected to be detected,” said Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Mohd Isham Jaafar during the daily press conference on April 6.
XE is a strain of the Omicron variant, and mutants are seldom good news. Early analysis points that this strain may be ten percent more transmissible than other Omicron variants, however thankfully, so far patients who contracted it have not shown severe effects.
Although it is still early to comment on how it is going to affect a certain demographic, scientists are studying the Covid-19 Omicron XE strain to understand its characteristics. Older adults have proven particularly susceptible to the latest wave amid waning booster immunity and easing Covid restrictions.
