For Sri Lanka, they were 220 for nine after 47.3 overs before heavy rain interrupted the match. Kusal Mendis top-scored for Sri Lanka again with 36, while Dhananjaya de Silva and captain Dasun Shanaka each scored 34.
Australia’s Pat Cummins took 4 wickets while debutant Matthew Kuhnemann and Glenn Maxwell bagged two wickets each.
Australia had led the five-match series 1-0, made 3 changes and handed left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann his ODI debut in Pallekele. Kuhnemann, Travis Head and Mitchell Swepson came on for Ashton Agar, Marcus Stoinis and Jhye Richardson.
Sri Lanka had made a change with Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury, with Jeffrey Vandersay as his replacement.
