Travellers note – Langya Virus detected in Northeast China – The Langya Henipavirus (LayV), referred to as Langya, has already infected 35 people, according to Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control, and it is in the same virus family as the Hendra virus and Nipah virus.

China’s discovery of the new, potentially fatal virus within its borders in Northeastern provinces of Shandong and Henan, can be transmitted from animals to humans, which some experts say could trigger yet another pandemic has raised concerns.

Human-to-human transmission of the virus has not been reported however at the same time he said that CDC has yet to determine whether the virus can be transmitted among humans and cautioned people to pay close attention to further updates about the virus, Taiwan’s CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang said.

In the research led by the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, researchers stated that no infections of Langya virus were found during the first year of pandemic between January and July 2020, with they pausing work to combat the Covid-19 spread.However, 11 more Langya virus cases were found from July 2020 onwards.

Researchers found that the most common symptomwas fever. It was followed by cough (50 per cent), fatigue (54 per cent), loss of appetite (50 per cent), muscle aches (46 per cent), and the tendency to vomit (38 per cent).

Chinese experts investigating the virus believe human cases are ‘sporadic’. They are still trying to work out if it can spread from person to person.
