Travelling fans at F1 Japan stunned by near miss – F1 world in utter disbelief over horrifying incident at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. Pierre Gasly also said the incident was ‘disrespectful’ to Bianchi’s memory.
“Eight years ago, on the same track, in the same conditions, with a crane. How? How today can we see a crane, not only in the gravel, on a race track, while we are still on the track? I don’t understand that. It’s disrespectful to Jules, disrespectful to his family and all of us. We are risking our life out there. We are doing the best job in the world but what we are asking is at least keep us safe,” he said.
What made Sunday’s incident even more concerning is that the recovery vehicle was on the live track. When Bianchi crashed it was quite some way away, near the rear of the gravel trap. The consequences were still fatal.

The use of the safety car to deploy a rescue truck onto the track was substantially more controversial and infinitely more dangerous. While it is standard practice to use on-track recovery vehicles when the safety car is deployed, cars are bunched behind the safety car, they’re forced to drive at a safe speed and have the safety car driver guiding them.
In Japan, the truck was deployed to the track in borderline undriveable conditions and with one of the cars not yet in the safety car queue.
“If I would have lost the car in a similar way as Carlos lost it on the lap before … I was doing 200 kph, but it is not the matter, even 100 kph. If I would have lost it and hit a 12-tonne crane, I would’ve been dead right now.”
